Census lookup request for William ANDERSON 1817 Russel Square
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 10:00 BST (UK) »
Hi I was requiring some help to find what information was available for William Anderson of Russel Square London.
The year was 1817 he was mentioned on a Will I recently read. He is specified as an uncle of a William Henry Anderson from Cheshunt Hertfordshire.
It is difficult  when you have little knowledge on the counties.
 thankyou Ellecat Australia

I wonder if this was his will in 1825 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D164775 and a deposition he made which lists him as a broker http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C6598207   If this is him he will not be on a census

Having had a quick read of the will of Wm. Anderson it only mentions his wife Ann to whom he leaves pretty much everything which is quite considerable. No children are mentioned except in the usual Solicitor speak  " any child or children I may have at the time of my decease".

I see that "my uncle William Anderson Esq of Russell Square" is first referred to in the 25 Nov 1818 codicil to William Henry Anderson's 1817 will, in the context of his having been given the benefit of an insurance policy to cover "those supposed debts which caused him so much uneasiness" and that WHA therefore recites having "too much confidence in the justice and liberality of my uncle" to think that he will oppose the executors in carrying out the testator's wishes under the will, namely to apply his net estate to the maintenance of his minor sons Alexander and William Henry (by Sarah Lewis otherwise Noble otherwise Anderson), failing which to hold it on trust for his sisters Caroline & Emily.

Nevertheless William Anderson did obtain letters of administration (with the will attached) in his capacity as creditor on 27 July 1819, William Henry Anderson having been buried at Cheshunt on 7 May 1819 aged 36.

The 1825 will I read was for William Anderson of Russell Sq. so sounds like the right one.

The first (1816) codicil to the older William Anderson's will names him as William Anderson, Esq "of Russell Square in the county of Middlesex and of Highwood Hill in the parish of Hendon...".

The second (1823) codicil names at least one daughter of his: Justina, the wife of William McKenzie, Esq.

The third (1824) codicil gives directions concerning some land acquired at Highwood Hill.

William Anderson of Highwood Hill was buried at St James, Westminster on 23 Feb 1825 aged 63.

Probate of his will was granted on 9 June 1825.
