1841 Census occupation abbrev?
« on: Monday 23 May 16 12:32 BST (UK) »
I have a Thomas Buckenham in 1841, and I cannot make out his occupation.

The village he's from is heaving with Ag Lab, Farmers and Linen Weavers, but he's a "Linen <something abbeviated, looks like oK>"

I have looked at the list of abbreviations here, to no avail.

http://www.census-helper.co.uk/census-abbreviations/l

In later life he's a farmer.

Can anyone decode this? The attached entry is 3 occupations from the same page (Class: HO107; Piece: 775; Folio: 19; Page: 32) The bottom one uses the same abbreviation, but I can't make out the "base" word in this either.  :(

Base word on the last one is Shoe. Is it just a W for worker?

It's a capital M, for manufacturer, or maker.

Wild guess - could it be "dr" short for "dresser" ?

STG

Ignore original suggestion  - I think it's more likely to be "M" for maker, as per Bookbox's post.
Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

So obvious, now you point it out.

My Thanks.

Yeah, it wasn't expanding 'M' into maker (or manufacturer) than was causing me trouble.

I was trying to expand "oK", a much harder task.  :)
