Looking for Great Uncle James Taylor who died in War
« on: Tuesday 24 May 16 08:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for a great Uncle James Taylor, who we have always been told died in the war.
Born in 1897, mother Elizabeth Nelson father James Taylor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps if you gave a bit more information such as where he was born or an occupation or where he may have fought.

The only information we know is that he was born in Anderston. I have his birth certificate, but we are unable to find anything other than his birth. My grandmother never met him and she was born just before WW2 so I am assuming that he fought in WW1

Hi ,

James Taylor's death may have been reported in Scotland , given his year of birth he should not have been able to serve abroad in the Army until 1916(19 years of age).
However , he may have lied about his age or the Army may have turned a blind eye.

Also , can't rule out service in Navy or RFC/RAF.

Scotlandspeople has 21 deaths for a James Taylor 1914 - 1921 , born 1897 +/- 3 years.
or
7 deaths 1914 - 1921 , born 1897 +/- 1 year , 4 of these are Minor Records/Service Returns.
I'm using the 1921 cut off year as he may have died of wounds at home after the war had ended.

The CWGC(WW1) has 1,034 entries for a J Taylor , although many can be ruled out through first name , age and parent details(where given) that would still leave many possibles.

Not an easy task given the information you have  :(

You might be able to find his service records , although only about 30% have survived.
Could be worth another post on our Armed Forces board -

Where was he living on 1911 census?

When did his parents die and who were informants?

In 1911 he was living in Anderston.
My grandmothers dad was the one who always said his brother had died in the war.
His birth year is definitely 1897 as I have the birth certificate.
