Have you looked at the War memorials local to where he was living / brought up as his name hopefully would be on one if he died in the war.

I'm really not sure where to find them, are they online? I live halfway across the world.

Sorry I can't help, I am not local either but it is generally worth looking for online war memorial sites I know ones I am interested in appear online. Just try googling.

There is the Evening Times Roll of Honour www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Evening-Times-Roll-of-Honour.aspx

The only possible entry I could see for a James Taylor, Glasgow birth, showed in 1918 here www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/Documents/ETRollofHonour191819.pdf  However, no identifying info given to be able to verify.

I've found a picture of him in the Army, looking at his features I'd say he was very young, so world war 1.
He's also wearing a kilt, I'm not sure if that would help

Why don't you post this photo on the Armed Forces board here on RC? Someone may recognise the regiment from his clothing etc.
