Mortimer - Orcheston, Wiltshire
« on: Tuesday 24 May 16 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi team

I know there has been a few threads re: Mortimer over the years, but does anyone have Mortimer's from Orcheston St. George 1700's?

I have Ann Mortimer bc. 1784, married Thomas Chandler of Manford Wilts (That's what the 1851 census looks like but I cant find that place exisiting) at Orcheston 1803.  Various issue follow.

Thanks in adv

bitzar,

Hi bitzar,

I had wondered if Manford was a shortened version of MANNINGFORD, that's the closest I can come up with. Four miles from Manningford is WILSFORD where there is this baptism

Thomas Chandler bapt. 5 February 1775, base born, no parent listed ( source: FS and FindMyPast )

Wilsford /Manningford registers are online here amongst others

http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/

Ann Mortimer was bapt. 26 Sep 1784 Orcheston. Dau. of William and Mary

Hi Claire

Thanks for the Manningsford tip.  I had also seen the Thomas Chandler 1775 baptism on FS and jotted it down.  I had a look at the link, a bit confusing but I'm sure I'll work it out.

I thought there may be some peeps out there who may pounce on this as their famo!

Cheer and thanks again Claire.

Bitz...

Halfway down the page.

(It is Wilsford (Pewsey) to distinguish it from Wilsford cum Lake, both in Wiltshire with the latter nearer to Orcheston but not to Manningford - never know when you might need that bit of local info!)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thanks MaxD

There are a few Chandler's around.  What does base born mean?

Hi bitzar

It means he was born illegitimately : ie: parents not married

Claire

It's a shame no mother was listed on the record either  :(

I know it's a shame isn't it. I wonder if it's worth checking the register for maybe a marriage of a 'female' Chandler that could possibly be his mother, or maybe she had more children as a single lady ?

Maybe worth a shot  :)
