I'd suggest you look at Ellis' entry in the 1939 Register (available on Findmypast - payment required) in order to find the birthdate stated for him then.

Thanks for the advice, I may try that.

I was surprised to see a comment (ciderdrinker) that he was in the army in 1911. Where did that come from? His medal card only shows service from 1914 to 1920. Also he may have had disciplinary problems he enlists in the Royal Dragoons, then he is shown in the Labour Corps, next the RASC, and finally back to the Labour Corps.

Hello
Yes the 1911 bit for Ellis Bucknell is from the 1911 census. We're not supposed to say any more for copyright reasons when it comes to the 1911 census, but there is a Private Ellis Bucknell with the same birth details on there in the Army.
With a name like that I'm assuming it's the same man,and the birth details do match.
It's a different regiment though.
I cheated with the birth date too as that's from the 1939 index but again I can't say more .There should be service records for him joining the Army but I can't see them anywhere and they may have been destroyed as many were by that bomb on the archives.

I do think you need that marriage certificate.

ps there are 3 Edward Ellis somethings registered June 1885 ,2 died as babies the 3rd Edward Ellis Edwards from Plymston St Mary is on the census up to 1901.He was born 27th April so probably can be eliminated too.

I must say I can't easily see any evidence that Ellis had a middle name Edward ???

I agree. I have nothing with the Edward other than the reference to the Ancestry tree. All the family  items we have only list Ellis Bucknell.

Interesting regarding the 1911 information. One would have thought that public records would not be copyrighted.

Regards,
Bruce

This is the link to guidance on posting 1911 info, I believe it also applies to 1939 register which is only available on FindMyPast.
