Had a thought, Rosie! David's marriage cert gives the occupation of his father, William, as Ships Carpenter. Wonder if he went to sea or told the family he was going to sea and never returned. Off to start another life!

Mags
Looks like he left his family and was a bigamist when he married again if it is the right William everything seems to point  in the right direction ..I have a feeling he also left the family in Canada daughter Maggie Nichol married a David Moore ...You can find them in the 1891 census in Canada her sister Nellie /Helen Nichol b1879 is with them

Maggie and David Moore both died in Texas she also named one of her sons David Arthur Moore
Death for Margaret Arthur Moore 9/12/1939 Texas father William Nicol's mother  Miss Smith

Hello All,

A wee update! Still cannot find Agnes on census. However, I have contacted a couple of folks who put their trees on anc. re Canadian family. One is looking through her FH notes to see what she has on William. She did say his parents were David Nicol and Margaret Arthur.
So, watch this space, hopefully, the mystery will be solved.

Hello Rosie,

I have looked under first names rather than surnames - Agnes, Agness, Aggie, Nettie, Nessie etc with no luck. Will keep looking.

Hello Rosie and All,

Another twist in this puzzle.

As posted above, Agnes McDonald Nicol died 24 April 1882 at 32 Dalrymple Street, Greenock.

I have come across an intimation from the Greenock Telegraph, Inverclyde Council: Agnes McDonald Nicol Saunders, died at 32 Dalrymple Street on 24 April 1882. However, there is not a death on SP for Saunders. You'll note that only difference in the two notices is the surname Saunders. Perhaps Agnes was living with a Mr Saunders.

Does anyone have access to the Greenock Telegraph archive? Newspaper date given as 24/04/1882. Unfortunately, the British newspaper Archive does not include this date.

Thanks,
Mags
