They had three children including Clarice Evelyn, my husband's grandmother.  Family believe she was from New Zealand.  All three birth records show father George Edwards and mother Ada.

*    Do these birth records give a place of Ada's birth, which is other than simply, "'New Zealand'. ??

*    Do you have the Death certificate for Ada EDWARDS ?

Ada's death >
"Sydney Morning Herald" - 30 April 1953

EDWARDS - Ada - April 28, 1953 at Balmain Hospital beloved mother of Clarice, dear mother in law of Roy  ... aged 80 years.

[Note that age given is 80 years, which would make her birth year circa 1873 ?? ]

Thanks Lu,  that is her death.  I searched TROVE using "Clarice Edwards" and it didn't show.

There's something interesting around 1892 in NSW.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/98481895?searchTerm=%22Ada%20Robertson%22

Ada Robertson, aged 15 (as of March 1892), ran away from home - her stepmother was Jane Robertson, of Gundary, her father, Andrew Robertson, a miner, away from home since 'last Christmas'. This was the sixth time she'd run away, according to Jane Robertson.

She was returned to her stepmother and admonished not to run away again, but clearly it didn't take as on the 9th April 1892 her stepmother put this notice in the paper:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/98480903?searchTerm=%22Ada%20Robertson%22

By 1894 "Mrs Jane Robertson's" property at Gundary is up for sale.

I cannot find a birth or marriage for a Andrew and Jane in NSW: other than one in 1877 to a Jane Hart which is quite interesting, as it apparently took place twice - at the Registry Office in Auckland, and then in Sydney:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01hr6/
This means we should be able to find this couple on a ship between 3rd July 1877 and 23rd July 1877, heading to Sydney.

However, the timing is odd for this to be the same couple - if Ada was born around 1877, then she must have only been an infant when Andrew and Jane married. Did her mother die in childbirth, perhaps?

Andrew and Jane who married 1877 are probably the same couple who had a daughter, Madeline Jane, in Orange district NSW in 1878 (she married 1910 so no chance of this being our Ada).
