p.s. Annie married in 1890, using the name Cripps, family stories have it that she always belived William Cripps to be her father untill she found her birth cert and realised Samuel was her father (and that she was born a few years earlier/later than she thought.)

Hi there

If you look at the 1861 census entry for Charlotte and Samuel Gilbert it has the father in law as William GREEN.  I would take that to mean Charlotte's father BUT he and the other inlaws all appear to be born Derbyshire not Leicestershire where she claims to be from.  Mind you the porkies she told you'd be hard pressed to believe anything ;D

Stupid question, does it definitely say 'formerly Grimley', nothing else?

I think your next step is a 1851 look up for Ilkeston for Samuel GILBERT or TAYLOR b c1831 ish

and

Same for Shepshed, Leicestershire for Charlotte GRIMLEY or GREEN b 1840 ish and see what that turns up

I think you are going to need to spend a fair bit of money on certs to prove anything!  I'd start by trying to identify one child from another liaison (ie. not same as Annies father) and see what that reveals

Hi

Have you got Annie in 1891 and 1901?  - any unexplained names in the family?

I would also have a go at trying to trace the marriages/census entries for some of the other kids....you never know what they might reveal

Hi ya,

I do have annie on the 1891 & 1901 census, she married a George Worsdale.  As far as i know there are no other unexplained names in the family

I think it does say Grimley, though i suppose it could be something else as the writing isn't great.

Thanks for all your help, you are all stars!

This looks like the birth of Charlotte GILBERT as shown at 1 mo on the 1861 census

Births Jun 1861

GILBERT  Charlotte     Basford  7b 103

they obviously thought their name was GILBERT at that point

and this looks like the older sister

Births Sep 1859

Gilbert  Annie Maria     Basford  7b 91

same batch

Hi  lenawylie

I have the answer to your question, or at least some of it.

Charlotte GRIMLEY married Samuel GILBERT June 1856

The both have reference Basford 7b 175

Basford is the district that covers Ilkeston

Whether either was married before and whether GRIMLEY was her maiden name or a previous married name, you will only find out by getting the certificate I think

Hope this helps

I may be splitting hairs but the correct spellings are Shepshed and Ilkeston nowdays, this may help you with your search. If you get into Nottinghamshire let me know. Basford covers the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
