Forest Grammar, Chudleigh
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi Devonshire peeps  ;D

Has anyone come across the Forest Grammar School?

I have found an ancestor teaching there in 1851 on the Ancestry sample census, the enumeration district is Chudleigh.  Streetmap comes up with Chudleigh Knighton, Chudleigh Rocks and just Chudleigh, all in Devon.  Chudleigh and Chudleigh Rocks are close but could not see Chudleigh Knighton (but that could be my eyes!).

Seems to be just boy pupils, ages 10-16 and many have been born overseas so it's likely to have been a boarding school.

I cannot find anything likely still in existence so I wondered if anyone knew anything at all about the school such as where exactly it was, when it closed or whether it just changed its name.

If I could at least pin down a location I could pester the local library  ;D

Many thanks for looking.

Steph.

Hi Steph.

I was just wondering if you've had any success following up from this post?

By the way I don't think there are any Grammar Schools in present day Chudleigh, and Chudleigh Knighton is a couple KMs North East of Chudleigh.

Ryan.

Hi Ryan,

This had been relegated to the back burner so thanks for nudging me, perhaps it's time to look again.

Do you know where the nearest library or archive is to Chudleigh?  Actually, is it Exeter?  The chap who taught at the school married one of the school domestics and she was born in Exeter so I would guess it's fairly close.

There, talked myself around that didn't I - so thanks again for the reminder.
