Have received the Marriage cert and will post some of it here. (if I can).
So the Martin family that CB53 and I found is the correct family, but they seem to have appeared from nowhere!  Haven't found any thing more of them on 1891 or 1901 census and as their names are reasonably common haven't been able to pin down any other records to them but will keep on trying. Still no idea of what happened to Joseph Naphtali, married Ellen 1881, son baptized Jan 1886 then disappears,  On the 1911 census by years of marriage Ellen and Robert are married 24 years=c1887, so sometime in those two years Joseph has been mislaid somewhere.
Thanks again for your help

Whoops, sorry, it's come out sideways, it started off upright, and don't know how to rotate it on here.

Well that is interesting ! I suppose it's just possible that Joseph Naphtali assumed another identity and called himself Robert Martin but it seems unlikely. I seem to recall a Robert Martin in an earlier census that I thought might match so I'll try to see if I can find him again, but what happened to Joseph ????

There is a death registration for a Joseph Napthali in Barnet Middlesex, age 48, in 1886, 4th quarter, volume 3a, page 124.

CB53 also had the idea that Joseph may have changed his name for some reason, (another member of this family did after a court case), Joseph was a Packing Case maker so could have  become a Coal Porter.  But the older children on 1891 census, don't seem to fit that idea .
Have found the Martin family on 1891 & 1901. Robert is age 30 on 1891 but looks like it could be 38 written badly, 48 in 1901 and 54 in 1911 and Ellen is 34 and 46 and 52, so they're all quite different!.  Edward is 5 and 15 and 25.
Robert is a Dock Labourer and a Coal Porter same as on 1911 and on 1901 Edward a Van guard and 1911 a Carman which may be similar employment ???.  Haven't found them in 1881 as yet, there are 3 children older than Edward, age 12,9 and 7 in 1891 so will try to find Robert, unknown wife and son Robert c1879.
Jo, thank you for that death, will keep it in mind, a Joseph Napthali was born E.London Mar 1841 which may or may not be the Barnet death, and a Joseph Naphtale born E.London J-F-M 1849, which on the original page appears to end in an 'i' so they both are a possibility.

As it was a very cold day, spent the afternoon searching for an 1881 link. Don't know if this is them or not but looks likely.
Robert 21, Catherine 21 and Robert 1... Bow, District 21, 22 White Post Lane. Labourer born Canning Town Essex, on 1911 born Kenning Town.  Same place or just a coincidence?  More research to do, but still no closer to finding Joseph's whereabouts.
Cheers
