Hunting for parents of George Burt.
« on: Wednesday 08 June 16 22:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have hit a brick wall in searching for the birthplace and parents of George Burt. Some rather scanty evidence may suggest that his family came from the Northamptonshire area. George was born abt 1749 and raised his family in Suffolk. Unfortunately the Bishop's Transcripts, Marriage Licences, Bonds and Allegations for the Archdeaconry of Leicester do not appear to be free online.
It is a bit of a long shot, but a recurring middle name over 3 generations is Phillips. (Thomas Phillips Burt in each case) I have lots of instances of a mother's maiden name being preserved in this way. I am therefore looking for a Burt marrying a Phillips not long before 1749. I have no siblings for George, so any that may be found would also help. Thanks.
Burt, Cockrill, Craske, Debenham, Double, Grimwade, Grimwood, Hilder, Mayhew, Ray. All from  West Suffolk around the Bury St. Edmunds area.

Thanks Colin. The Hum, Ham, actually appears as Humm on one of the family gravestones at Norton. May possibly have corrupted to Hume over the years. It is always difficult to make exact traces when rectors in those days spelled the names as they heard them.
Other family names for possible father of George may be Arthur or William and female names Mary and Jane. (Unfortunately all very common).
