A shame if it has been demolished.  Plenty of money to be made by developers in that area though  ::)

There is a Richmond local history group, it might be worth contacting them to see if they have any information.  http://www.richmondhistory.org.uk/

Hopefully Dawnsh will spot this as I think she has more idea on Richmond resources than me  ;D

Rosie

Thanks.
I found the Richmond LH group on FB. I have asked on there, also I found that there is a family grave in the churchyard. There is an index and I have requested a photo.

This side by side view shows the location clearly so you can compare:

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=19&lat=51.4619&lon=-0.2888&layers=176&right=BingHyb

It seems that Manor House must have not existed very long. It does not appear on the earlier map Wilcoxon provided a link to and the houses which are there now look to have been built in the 20s or 30s.

If you trace your mouse over the outline of Manor house in relation to the houses that exist there now, there seems to be some correlation, though the frontages are new(ish). There is also some space behind the houses fronting Sheen Road on the corner of Manor Road.

It seems odd that a house which was as large as Manor House was demolished and very few houses built to replace it - in fact some empty space is left where part of it once stood.

Odd. Could it have been war damage?  :-\

That seems likely - this piece on the Courlands Estate (which would have been about opposite the Manor House, I think) talks about some destruction during the war. http://www.courtlandsestate.com/Courtlands%20History.htm

That link doesn't work Spidermonkey.  :-\

I've been googling to see if I can find any lists of war damage in Richmond - found loads about WW2 but not much about WW1. I'm sure a local history group or local library would be able to help.

I had a superfast reply from Richmond, and there is even more information than I expected. Really pleased

Hmmm, how bizarre.

The crux of the info was that on the 20th September 1940, Runnymede House (one of the blocks of flats that were built on the site of Stawell House) was hit and partially demolished.

I am impressed with that gravestone - addresses as well.   :o    The picture is really clear.

I hadn't realised that you were looking at the Francis's I wrongly assumed it was one of their servants  ::)  That will teach me for only looking back at one census.
