Just to clarify, the Newton is the one south east of Kirkham.

There's a matching baptism at Lund Church, just north of Clifton, on 6 Dec 1857, daughter of farmer Christopher and Ann from Newton.

There's a 21-year old Lancelot Wharton arriving in New York on 14 Jun 1879 on the Britannic. Occupation given as Butcher, so not sure if this is the right one.

Crew lists, for the most part, are currently unindexed.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

      Can you please confirm which Newton   that you think it is, please?

Could it be Newton-le-Willows?

Scouseboy -- see Andrealston's post -- it's the Newton near Kirkham.
His birth on Lancs BMD is in 1857 Kirkham sub registration district. Mother's maiden name Cragg.

Springer5 -- how do you know he was a Mariner please? I can't see him after 1871 in England. What is the last record you have for him?

There is the butcher going to USA who has already been mentioned - but after that - nothing that I can find.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

No central personal Merchant Navy service records were kept between 1857 and 1913,  central personal records for the period of the first world war have been destroyed.

The only way to trace MN seamen during these years is via crew agreements. I have searched the only two crew agreement databases on line for the years 1881 and 1915 together with the small collection on FindMyPast. There is nothing on Lancelot Wharton
