FIDDLEFORD 1841/1851 CENSUS
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am searching for John Oswald (Oswell) (Oswall) born in Fidelford, Dorset

in 1831. Please could someone kindly check the 1841 and 1851 censuses for

Fiddleford (close to Sturminster Newton) for me. Any help is very much

appreciated to locate the Oswald family.

Hi
I think that Fiddleford used to form part of Child Okeford, but later came under Okeford Fitzpaine. I checked the censuses for both these but found no Oswald (or any alternative spelling). Nor could I see any Oswald in the baptisms. Sorry.

Many thanks for looking up OSWALD in the Fiddleford records. At present

I have only the 1871 census information (Marske-by-the-sea, Yorks) for this

family to go on and I guess that spelling of place names may not be always

that accurate in Victorian times.

But it seems a bit unlikely that somebody living in Yorkshire just made up

their place of birth as Fidelford, Dorset. I wonder if there are (were) any

other places in Dorset with a similar name.

The closest fit seem to be the OSMOND family living in Fiddleford at this

time?

Many, many thanks.

Hi  Yes there is a Fiddleford in Dorset I went there last year
With a lady who wrote two books about Fiddleford and the folks who lived there I will have a look in the books and also see if I can find your family on my disks
The title of the books are
Where Elm Trees Grew
and Their Own Dear Days. by Olive A. Hall
If you look under new and used books you may find them for sale.
I come back later if I find out anything for you.
Kind regards Chris.
