Margaret Ann Stephenson & Her Elusive/Mysterious First Husband!
« on: Sunday 26 June 16 20:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My 4x great uncle William Stephenson's (1823-1893) eldest child, a daughter Margaret Ann Stephenson is causing me a few headaches!

Margaret Ann Stephenson was born in 1847 in Blyth, Northumberland. I have her at home with parents William & Susanna in 1851. In 1861, however she is not with her family, they are here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7JZ-LCL

I have been unable to find Margaret Ann at all in 1861, there are possible deaths in the Tynemouth Registration District for Margaret Stephenson's in 1852, 1855 & 1860.

In looking for Margaret Ann's brother William born in Blyth in 1852 in the 1881 census, I found him here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKXT-7M51 living with a widowed Margaret A Davis of exactly the same age as Margaret Ann Stephenson would be. Also in the household  is Margaret A Davis's son George Edwin Davis aged 8.

There is a marriage record in the March qtr of 1869 in the Tynemouth reg dist for a Margaret Ann Stephenson to an Edwin Davis. I can find neither a birth for the son George Edwin Davis nor a death for the husband Edwin Davis.

I have found a baptism for George Edwin Davis on familysearch, showing that he was baptised on 22nd Dec 1872 at Earsdon/Blyth to parents John Edwin Davis & Margaret Ann Davis. Which was he, Edwin Davis or John Edwin Davis?

On familysearch there is a record of a Margaret A Davis marrying/remarrying to a George Patience on 4th March 1883 at Christ Church, Tynemouth, father shown as William Stephenson.

I have also been unable to find the Davis's in 1871 at all.

My questions are therefore these:

Where was Margaret Ann Stephenson in 1861?

Where were Edwin/John Edwin & Margaret Ann Davis in 1871?

Can a birth record be found for George Edwin Davis?

When did Edwin/John Edwin Davis die?

Am I following the correct timeline of events? Stephenson & Davis aren't exactly uncommon names! I am in need of some fresh eyes to help sort/untangle this one please!

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

It might be useful to you to know that the code for the 1869 marriage on the North Tyneside Registrar's site is C-5, which means that they married at St Alban's Earsdon (per this useful list http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=550486.0 )

This might enable you to get a Parish register look up done at some time - could perhaps clarify things about the groom?

Hi Radcliff & JenB,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated indeed!

Radcliff, Many thanks for the death record in Cheshire, will check that one out!

Have you discounted Edwin Davis born Liverpool 1844
He is a mariner and his papers state he is in Blyth January 1872

address Eldon Street Blyth

I haven't discounted anything or anyone as yet Radcliff. What papers are these & where would I find them? This looks to be a very interesting possibility indeed!

JenB, Many thanks for that list, much appreciated indeed! I hadn't been aware of the list at all, most useful indeed! Just one query though, familysearch has Margaret Ann's second marriage as taking place in Christ Church, Tynemouth yet the North Tyneside Registrars site shows it (C-1) as taking place at Christ Church, North Shields. Are they one and the same church as I am a little confused by this?

I will also definitely be getting a look up done re the first marriage and hopefully gaining some info re the groom!

Many thanks to you both again.

Kind regards

David
