I will be at Northumberland archives on Wednesday as usual and will happily look up the Earsdon marriage for you.

Christine, if you had time to look up the 1872 baptism that might also be useful (father's occupation?)  :D

I have found a baptism for George Edwin Davis on familysearch, showing that he was baptised on 22nd Dec 1872 at Earsdon/Blyth to parents John Edwin Davis & Margaret Ann Davis.

One for the back burner:

On the Register of Accounts of Wages and Effects of Deceased Seaman
record dated 16th January 1873, port from which [information] received: Blyth.
Edwin Davies, [rank] Mate, aged 27, vessel: The Clansman, particulars of death: 13.11.72 at sea.

An article in the Shields Daily Gazette 29 January 1873 confirms the barque Clansman was from Blyth. It was lost with all hands during 'a terrific storm' in the Baltic on 13th November 1872, was found 30th November and towed into Copenhagen.

That was a good find - I'm now wondering whether there's a local newspaper available for that time.  Will at least look at the index tomorrow.

The 1872 baptism is now in my book  :)

Here is the marriage

Feb. 23rd 1869, by banns

Edwin Davis aged 25, Bachelor, Mariner of South Blyth.  Father William Davis, Engineer
Margaret Ann Stephenson aged 22, Spinster of South Blyth. Father William Stephenson, Shipwright

Witnesses  William Stephenson and John Rankin.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to the second witness as he appears on many of the marriages so is likely to be Parish Clerk or somesuch.

As for the 1872 baptism – it’s not in Earsdon.  I suspect that it will be in St. Cuthbert’s Blyth - I’ll look next week if nothing else is found before then.

Christine

George Patience wife Maria died 1881, looks like Margaret could have had a son John with George.

That's promising, looks like he was the mariner that Radcliff mentioned earlier. Looking at the journeys listed on the Mates Certificates papers it seems like he married just a few days before he went off on a six month voyage.
He was also at sea at the time of the 1871 census.

Hi JenB, Christine, Jennifer & Radcliff,

Firstly apologies for my tardy reply.

JenB, Many thanks for the seamans papers & newspaper info, much appreciated.

Christine, Many thanks for looking up the marriage record, much appreciated. Margaret Ann's father William was indeed a shipwright, so that confirms that is is indeed the correct marriage. Also thanks for adding the baptism to look up, much appreciated. Just as a note familysearch where I found the 1872 baptism stated that it took place in Earsdon/Blyth Northumberland, therefore your suspecting that it may have taken place at St Cuthberts in Blyth is I suspect spot on.

Jennifer, Many thanks for George Patience info, much appreciated.

Radcliff, Many thanks for the Davies marriage & baptism info, much appreciated.

My thanks to you all again for your kind assistance and help, all very much appreciated.

Kind regards

David

What I was trying to work out is that he was apprenticed at Blyth but born Liverpool
yet I can not pinpoint  him in 1851 with father William
