1861 Leicester census - Dudley's
« on: Sunday 25 July 04 13:10 BST (UK) »
If anyone can help me find details of the following family it would be greatly appreciated:

I am looking for the Dudley’s who lived in Leicestershire:

Sarah Dudley was born about 1794, Woodhouse, Leicestershire and I think died aged 73 years, late of Andrew Street, Leicester.  She had the following sons, one of which I think she was living with after her husband John had died:

1. James born 1824

2. William born 1831, the 1881 census records that he was living at 23 Braunstone Gate, Census Place:  Leicester St Mary Leicester

3. George born 1833, the 1881 Census records that he was living at 162 Latimer St South, Census Place:  Birmingham Warwich

4. Henry born 1835

5. Samuel born 1837, the1851 census indicated he was a blacksmith, birthplace Longdale, Leicester.

Any help appreciated

Hi Shane

Sorry but they seem to have disappeared I have looked in the index for 1861 and there was no Dudleys that you have refered to about the ages stated.

But I did find a marriage for John Dudley and Sarah Hutchinson at Woodhouse on the 22 ? 1815 the witness was a Ruth Hutchinson.

There was also two deaths at Woodhouse

DUDLEY   JOHN   25 OCT 1846   27
DUDLEY   JOHN   12  JUL 1860   69

All the best
Linda

Greeting's Shane. . .

As Linda said no sign of them in either City or County Census 1861.
But found the following on the 1851.

Living in the Parish of Maplewell & St Paul's.
Woodhouse Eaves.

John Dudley. 56.
Sarah.          55.
William.       20.
Samuel.       14.

George Dudley. 17.
Living in the village of Swithland.

But I suppose you have this info already. . .

Thanks for the prompt replies.

It is a bit of a mystery where they went to.  There is a possibility that they went to Birmingham, as a couple of the sons were married there.  I will have to explore that a bit further.

Thanks Linda for the marriage info on John Dudley and Sarah Hutchinson at Woodhouse on the 22 ? 1815 the witness was a Ruth Hutchinson and the two burials at woodhouse.  These are the husband and first son of Sarah.

Thanks Mike for your help.  I did not know that a George Dudley was living in Swithland at the 1851 census.  Any further census info on him (house or anyone he was with at time) would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Shane Dudley

Greeting's Again Shane. . . .

Unfortunately the 1851. Census I have
Only goes on Name and an index No. for the Village.

Under Dudley it's listed as follows. .

John 56.  . . .302. = Maplewell.
Sarah 55. . . 302.
William.20. . 302.
Samuel.14. . 302.

George. 17. . .315. = Swithland.

And that's all the Dudley's listed. . .

So it would entail trawling through the whole of the disk to match up George to the right household. . .
but not knowing the surname of the head of the household. . .
Sorry. . . .
But I'll have an other look for you on an other disk I have for the 1861. Census which has images
But this too can be a bit long winded. . .

I'll have a go tomorrow & I'll let you know either way

Greeting's Again Shane. . .

Had a look on the other disk for 1861. for
Dudley's in all of Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves,
and Maplewell, (also called Longdale )
Sorry no luck. . .
But saw that Samuel's occupation in 1881.
was a " Blacksmith.". . .
So Checked out the Blacksmith in Swithland in 1861.
BINGO ! ! . . .George Morris (46) with Wife (50) and 3 children & 1 G/son....
So went back to 1851.. .
Looked up " Morris" and BINGO ! !  they had the same Children and 2 more . . . but older.
And the index No. was 313. &  312. for George Dudley in 1851.too close to be dismissed ?

So George Dudley's occupation in 1851. could well have been a Blacksmith. . .

I have found the following burials for a Sarah Dudley's. . .

St Mary de Castro Church.
23rd.March 1839. aged 55.

Welford Road Cemetery.
12th. August 1867. aged 73.
Buried in Unconsecrated Ground.

Mike

Thanks for your help.

I have ordered the death certificate for the sarah dudley buried at Welford Road Cemetery on 12th. August 1867. aged 73.  I believe there were some other dudley's buried (infants) in the same grave and I'm hoping that the cerificate may give me some clues.  The age is a perfect match.  Sad about the unconsecrated ground.

Thanks again

Mike

Thanks again

The list of burials at the Welford Road Cemetery is very interesting.  I hope to receive the Sarah Dudley death cerificate late next week.

The record for "DUDLEY   THERESA   20   JUN   1887   20   U" looks like one of my family.  An 1881 Census has her as the daughter of the William Dudley (you found in the 1851 census) age 15  Born Leicester, Leicester - Daughter  Frame Hand Hosiery.

The others listed in your previous note maybe related, but as yet I have no record of them.

If you can find any other dudley burials in the area it would be appreciated, but I do not want to impose on your goodwill and generosity too much.

My ultimate geneology aim is to find a living dudley relation in the UK.  This hopefully will be a justification for my wife to let me visit the UK again.  Thats why my initial interest is in the five Sarah Dudley sons listed on my first note.  She had more sons but they went to Australia.  I think it may take me a few years of digging.

Thanks again and good hunting

Cheers
