Occupation: Shoe clicker
« on: Friday 22 July 05 08:33 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

Anyone tell me what a shoe clicker was.  Seems that my Gt. GF was one at one time, though one census has him down as a shoemaker, as was my GFather.

From 'Old Trades, Jobs and Professions' at:
http://www.countrylovers.co.uk/craf/oldcraft.htm

"BOOT / SHOE CLICKER This was one of the skilled and best paid jobs in the shoe industry. A clicker CUT out the leather for the different parts that made up the shoe and the term comes from the sound made when carrying out the job."
