Motorcycle registration - 1970 - help please?
« on: Monday 11 July 16 11:01 BST (UK) »
Before we left England my dad owned a motorcycle and sidecar. He has passed now and we want to know what the motorcycle was.

If you have an address and a name can you trace what vehicles a person owned back in the 70's.

I know it is a long shot but Australia is a long way away and I need help with this one.

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping, Cheers Ted

Very unlikely that you could find anything after all this time.

Try to remember the name of the bike, was it Triumph?

Before about 1972 vehicle registrations were administered by county or borough councils, and some of their records have survived in local record offices. So if the bike was first registered in an area whose records survive, you may be in with a chance. The crucial element in this is the registration number. Do you have this, or does it appear on any old photos? (But if you have a photo, someone would probably be able to identify it anyway.)

Some sites which might help you in this are:
http://www.drivearchive.co.uk/home.asp
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/history.htm
http://www.kitheadtrust.org.uk/vehicle_records_5.html
The last of these also has a list by area of what records survive and where.

Good luck!

Arthur

Try an email to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority)?

See: https://www.gov.uk/data-requests-dvla

What's the worst they can say?! ;D

There might be other ways around it such as local knowledge.  If you tell us who and where, there's a chance that someone will have a contact in the right area.

We lived on the Wirrall in Little Neston and Dad left his bike with a young man in his 20's.

If you have any family photos with the bike in it, try posting them on here, you never know, someone may be able to recognise them. There's also an organisation called the vintage Motorcycle Club in Britain, they may be able to tell you what make it was for certain from any photos.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
