I think I have a solution to the 1881 census, and suspect what the certificate may say,and again it lies in the Arch/Petford duality.
As referred to before there,is a record of William and Kezia Petford, with son Edward born 1879 in the 1881 census(RG11 2981 37 10-Richmond Terrace Birmingham).
There is an 1877 marriage at Droitwich of William Arch to Kezia Ruff.
The 1881 record gives William Petford of an age to be the William Arch with William,Mary and Susan(Arch/Petford) of the 1871  census.
Futher there is a Kezia Ruff, born Abberton Worcestershire as Kezia Petford of the 1881 record- and her parents are Edward and Susan.
I suspect the certificate will say parents William and Keziah, though I can't find a death record for this Keziah before William marries Martha in 1886.

Regards
Roger

The only death for a Kezia Arch I could find on Free BMD was in 1916 in Oxford, age 63 which would make her around the same age as William. She matches the only Kezia Arch I can see on familysearch in the census records: in Cregoe St Birmingham for 1891 (Married with daughter), Cregoe St Birmingham 1901 census, Birmingham Ladywood in 1911.
Her daughter Alice (aged 9 in 1891 census) seems to have moved to Woodstock by 1901 so that might explain why Kezia died in Oxford rather than Birmingham.

I can't see any other Kezia to Arch marriages in the correct time period.

I may need to go and buy more certificates.

Keziah Arch is listed in the Birmingham Rate Books on Ancestry. I don't know how much information would be available on a record like that. The overview indicates that it lists who occupies the house, but is that just going to be head of household?

I think it lists all who occupy the house, but not age or occupation.I will try to see if I can locate a birth /baptism for Alice,to see if I can find the father.Perhaps appropriate to a query re Llandudno it's "....curiouser and curiouser...".

Thank you Mabel and Roger.

I have just received the 1878 certificate and indeed the parents of Edward are William Arch and Kezia Arch formerly Ruff.

Does anyone have the address in Yardley where the Arch family are living in the 1871 census please?

So did William and Kezia simply split,or formally divorce,or did William become a bigamist,or is there another William Arch(!)?

Thank you Angie, I was hoping the addresses at census and on the birth certificate might have matched, unfortunately they don't.

I could not find a divorce for William Arch when I looked.

There are multiple Williams in the Stafford-shire/Warwickshire/Worcestershire area, this seems to be where the Arch name is most common and I have tracked multiple families through the census records in an attempt to work out which one later moved to Wales. I was able to discount many of them that way. I shall have a look at my notes and see if there would be any likely candidates.
