I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.  I have both my grandmother and grandfather's place and dates of birth in Germany.  I would like to find documents relating to both of them but despite looking on commercial sites have had no luck.

I think you need to contact the relevant Standesamt (Municipalty offices)?
Then, usually, you have to apply in writing stating as much information as possible.
