Hand loom weavers, Calton. Estate.
« on: Wednesday 20 July 16 01:53 BST (UK) »
I knew my GGG-grandfather, John McFadyen, was a hand loom weaver in Glasgow, but I did not realize the significance of Calton as his place of residence until today! His wife, Jean/Jane Renfrew, died on 24 January 1855 at Clyde Street, Calton. Does anyone know of other McFadyens living in Calton late 18th, early 19th centuries? Perhaps these McFadyens came from Ireland; I read that there were many Irish immigrants who settled in the Calton area.

There is also a connection to Bankhead or Shawmuir Cottage, Pollokshaws. GG-grandfather James McFadyen died there on 17 April 1882, and his widow, Anne Dow, died there on 17 December 1895. Am I right in thinking that this cottage was on the Pollok Estate?

Had a quick look through the Trades history of the Glasgow Weavers but unfortunately couldn't find any McFadyen's. There's a website on the Calton Weavers.

Shawmuir Cottage can be seen on this map just south of the allotment gardens near the White Cart Water
