The best and safest way with a common name like Matthew Green, would be to get his marriage certificate which would give you his father's name and occupation. Once you have that you should be able to find him in the 1861 census and get his mother's name and siblings.

What date of birth does he give on the censuses, is he consistent with that?

Not very helpful was he! If he was born in 1847 or 1848, when he married in 1866 he was underage, so I wonder if he changed his date of birth because of that?

Did you know he was in court for inciting a group of Irishmen to attack a policeman in June 1875 in West Hartlepool? He was fined £20. Amongst the group was a John Hanley, possibly his brother in law? The item is headed " Irish Riot in West Hartlepool" and can be seen on Find My Past.
