Ladies

I wondered after all your expert detective work if we could now shine the light on Catherines husband John Strachan - I'd like to discover more about his origins...

When Catherine died in 1910 John was a coal miner in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He remarried in June 1911 to Mary Heaney - she already had a 6 month old child called Hugh who was born illegitimate and they would then go on to have 10 other children of the marriage.

John Strachan born 07 Feb 1869 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire - died 30 May 1936 Hamilton , Lanarkshire

His parents were Peter Strachan (1830 - 1904) and Jane Waterston (1839 - 1901)

Peters parents were James Strachan and Margaret Harris (1807 -1875)

Thats as much as I have really I was hoping someone could pick up a lead specifically on James Strachan and Margaret Harris - Some investigation has pointed to Forres in the North of Scotland but so far I'm unconvinced....

Please help x

Hi Paul

Have you got death certs for James Strachan (d. 1875?) and Margaret Harris (d. ?) to confirm their parents' details?

The search in Edinburgh did indeed find Catherine's admission to the asylum on the 22 Jun 1909 however that's all so far - now the index has been found I have been assured records will be available but this will involve another charge for them to go look at the records - Which I am happy to arrange.

Good luck with that, Paul. These specific records together with the very detailed PR records gathered by Anne have given you a huge amount of personal details and background haven't they.

Yes Monica

I'd still like to learn how Catherine and my great grandfather actually met but I guess somethings will remain lost forever - You are right though together we have learned more than I ever thought possible

Paul,
When I looked at the PR stuff, I had to "speed read" through it and take notes.

I would have needed quite a few hours to go through all of it and I know that I probably missed some important or relevant info.

I have checked my scribbled notes and I realise that I omitted  to record something that I saw relating to Catherine's final release from the Poorhouse in 1903.
From memory, she was released into someone's care

Apologies. I  forgot write it down but  I'm 100% certain it was a male name
Definitely not  Mr Strachan or I would have made the connection immediately.

As She married quite soon after release, I wonder if the last piece of  missing info is relevant?

Anne that's a great help. I will go to the mitchell library and view these poor records. Are they quite easy to find ?

Hi Paul,
The records are easily located.
Enter a name and year of birth.
I had to guess because although Catherine was born in 1876, the PR records that I located stated that she was born in 1878 and 1880.
I kept the references and will PM them to you
