I have a bit of a mystery, which I hope that someone can help me unravel. In the 1891 Census, I have a James Birchall b1864 in Prescott, Lancs. Living with his wife Jane nee Atkinson and daughter Frances Ellen b1887 in Westhoughton, Lancs, in Spennymoor, Co. Durham.. They have obviously just recently moved from Lancs. to Co. Durham as witnessed by Frances Ellen's birth. in 1901 the wife Jane is now married to a William Redhead and has with her two other Birchall's Eva b1896 and Alice b1898, but no Frances Ellen. I have not been able to find the whereabouts of either James or the daughter Frances Ellen, post 1891. Can anyone, kindly help me find out what happened to them, after 1891. James is my GG Uncle.

There's a death of James Birchall aged 33, Sep qtr 1899 Durham.

How have you identified the child as Frances Ellen?  She is Frances O Birchall, 4, in 1891.

Frances Ellen Birchall was baptised in Seaforth in 1887, daughter of William Birchall, engineer, and Jane.  Your James was a coal miner in 1891.

Is the relevant marriage that of James Birchall/Jane Anderson in Auckland district, Mar qtr 1889? If so it postdated Frances' birth.

Hi,
Thanks for the 3 replies. My responses are:-
1) Apologies for the Frances Ellen issue. That must have been an error but having said that, I can find no birth record for Frances O), only know that she exists from the 1891 Census. As James Birchall and Jane Atkinson were married in the Auckland District of Co. Durham, in Jan-Mar 1889 Frances was born prior to the marriage. So was she James or did he just agree to take her on as his own? Incidentally, you have Jane as Anderson, it should be Atkinson. Jane Anderson was the one married to William Birchall ( my name!).
Conclusion, need to confirm that the death of James Birchall in 1889, is ours. Frances O Birchall's whereabouts, post 1881, is still a mystery.

2) I will check his death in the mining accidents, to see if that is why he died prematurely.

3) Thank for the marriage info re: Jane and William Redhead

Yes - sorry for the Anderson/Atkinson confusion, which was just a typo.  How strange that I accidentally landed on the maiden name of the "other" Jane!
