West Hatch / North Curry - Wood and Turner
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 05:35 BST (UK) »
My 3rd Great Grand mother was Sophia L Wood (or Woods) born May 1836 in England.  She married George Gill Day (who was from Stoke St. Gregory) in Plymouth on April 15 1855 and emigrated to Canada with him that year.  With help provided by kind souls to a previous post of mine I have managed to uncover most of George Gill Day's family tree.  Now I am trying to track down Sophia's ancestors

Her father is listed as William Wood, carpenter.  Her residence at time of marriage was 24 Hampton St, Plymouth.  I believe the L stands for Louisa as that is the name of her first daughter.

Based on data base research to date I believe it is most likely that her father was William Wood, born 1806 in Exeter, Devon who married Mary Turner in West Hatch on 14 Mar 1833 and then later married Charlotte in 1865.  Charlotte and their first two children are marked as born in North Curry in the 1871 census with the two youngest born in West Hatch.

Using ancestry.ca, the only record of a Sophia Wood (birth place North Curry) that I can find is in the 1851 census where there is a Sophia Wood age 13 who is a servant to a Sarah Webber in Taunton.

Any help would be much appreciated as I seem to have hit a dead end on this one.

Regards, Linda

Thank you so much.  And Sophia is not at home in 1851 so could well be the Sophia who is a servant in Taunton that I did find.

I'll start with this - looks more promising than the other data that I dug up.

It does look like Willliam might have remarried Charlotte.  Hard to believe two men of the same name and roughly the same age in such a small community.  The major problem is that in the census records with Charlotte - in 1871 he shows his birth location as Exeter Devon (not Staplegrove Somerset) and in 1881 as Exeter Somerset (which doesn't exist).

So still some digging to do.
