Location of a grave in Toronto......
« on: Saturday 06 August 16 15:22 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have this attached photo of William P. Whitney, (son of my gt. gt. gt. grandfather), his daughter Gladys Whitney and her husband Robert Fleming.  I was told they were buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto.  After having searched through the records of Park Lawn, I have been unable to find any record of these burials.

I live in England and the person that I had contact with in Canada and gave me this photo, is no longer alive.  Could anyone tell me how I can find out where in Toronto this memorial stone is, as the records for Park Lawn don't have it listed

Thank you,

Diana

I wonder if the memorial stone was erected for William P Whitney where he was buried but the other family members were buried in Park Lawn but commemorated in 'Prospect'   :-\   :-\

Hi Rosey,

That's really fascinating.  I didn't enter my head that that was the answer, or it seems that way!  It is definitely my William Philip Whitney, although I have always had him down as being born in 1851, as on 1851 census, it says he is 3 weeks old and I think the cenus was usually taken in April?  I know quite often in those days, that people were never quite sure how old they were.  I have had experience of that a few times.
It just seemed strange that there is no record of Robert Fleming or Gladys Fleming (nee Whitney) being buried in Park Lawn.  If their memorial is in Prospect Cemetery, would they not still record the burial as being in Park Lawn?
Very grateful for your help Rosie, it seems to have solved the puzzle.

Regards, Diana

Hi,

Robert Fleming's obituary is in the Toronto Star on Jan 30 1943.  Says he is to be buried in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Will check for Gladys.

You are welcome.

Not seeing an obit for Gladys in the Toronto papers.  I checked from May 2-May 13.

Possible that Gladys and her husband bought a plot in Park Lawn when their daughter died in 1923.  Perhaps they recorded Gladys's father's name on the stone too?   William P might be buried in Prospect, but is on the tombstone in Park Lawn with the Flemings?

Or, William P might be buried in Park Lawn, and there was an error made on his death cert about the place of burial?

RK

Thanks very much for searching for Gladys for me.
The relative I was in touch with said that they were all buried in Park Lawn and if the memorial stone was in Park Lawn, she would perhaps assume that because Williams name was there, that he was buried there, when he might not have been.
I think I'll try emailing the xcemetery office and ask them and see what they say.
Thank you both for your help.
