Al, only just come across your thread, looking at the index card
it says he was entitled to 14-15 star, you only recieved that medal if you went over seas before 1916, if he went overseas after 1915 he would get te British war medal and the Victory medal. and of course if he did not serve overseas he would recieve none.
A relative of mine Walter Brown born 1900 served with the manchester regiment, although it was late in the war he was still sent overseas.

Thanks for the information Jim.

I think I confused things by talking about my two Grandfathers in the same thread.  The medal card is for my maternal Grandfather (born 1892) who served in France but the photo and most of the discussion is about my paternal Grnadfather (b. 1900) who served in Egypt.

Regards,

Allan

Allan!

Can I ask some serious questions?

What do you know about this young man in the photograph?
Do you have any other pictures of him? (young or old)
Where did you get your information about him?

Hi Annie,

This is what I have on John Crighton:

- He was apparently born in 1900 (according to my father) although I can find no record of his birth
- His Mother was Matlida Crighton (b. 1865 Dundee), father unknown.  The only "proof" I have of this is a copy of her birth certificate that my father found when his mother died.  By the time my Grandfather married, his mother was calling herself Matilda Sullivan (on marriage certificate) although I've been unable to find a marriage for her.
- He married Amy Maker is 1923 and they had 3 children (have all the BMD references)
- He died in 1956 of emphesima
- The only other photo that I have of him is at a wedding in 1946.  Although it's nearly 40 years on, it's definitely the same guy.  My parents have quite a few more photos of him including one I saw recently that would have been taken in 1924 as he is with my grandmother and their daughter who sadly died of the measles in 1925.
- My Father told me that his Father was in Egypt during WWI but knows nothing more.

That's about all I have.  The only thing I've got on him from my family tree research over the last year or so is confirm his marriage, the birth of his 3 children and the death of two of them from the BMD records.

Did you think I'd made this guy up ???

Cheers,

Al

Look at this Mr. C!!

These are London Battalions - unfortunately there's quite a few - and quite a few of them were in Eygpt!

But this was Dundee - maybe John's Dad John!!!......

Hi Annie,

Bit of a needle in a haystack job here!  I think it's time to put John and his military record on the back burner for a while where he can keep your Slinns company ;)

Cheers,

Al
