Me too, but I think I'm resigned to it being wishful thinking  :'(

I think a closer inspection of the Tynemouth PRs would definitely be helpful though as the missing pages and Hood / Wood uncertainty really isn't helping matters.   The Joshua Hood will naming his brother as John Hood of North Shields could be something though, but Ive no idea what the petition could refer to.

As it starts DO I'd wondered if it meant Died Overseas & is referring to HMS Pearl?  From what I can make out (and ships really aren't my thing) Commerce of Marseilles didn't leave dock again, so could Joshua have transferred to the Pearl?

"HMS Pearl spend the years between the end of the American War of Independence in 1783 and the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War in 1793 engaged in the peacetime duties of a frigate, those of patrolling and 'showing the flag'.

Once war broke out again, HMS Pearl continued as she had during peacetime. On 16th April 1797, HMS Pearl captured the French privateer L'Incroyable of 24 guns, in company with the 36 gun frigate HMS Flora"

It may have opened other doors though to check

an odd 1 off Reed baptism entry in a parish where only Hood's are in the register by same fathers first name as the Reed entry  and no other Reed's

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

William Reed/ Hood is a cooper in the baptism record. Would a cooper be called a carpenter?

Three apprenticeship records from Newcastle upon Tyne

William REED master, carpenter
Apprentice: John French
Year: 1789

William REED master, carpenter
Apprentice: George Collingwood
Year: 1785

William REED master, carpenter
Apprentice: Thomas Bilton
Year: 1793

No William HOOD master cooper/ apprentice that I can see.

Talking of spelling variation

Scarborough Quaker monthly meeting 1784

George Head bn 3rd January 1784, parents: Joseph ( cordwainer) and Hannah Head of High Hoyland.

Does the witness look like Mary Hood  ???

I think both parents die within a couple of years of this baptism, I've researched this guy before

EDIT: Scrap that remark another child was baptized in 11 Jan. 1791 ~ Eliha, witnesses: Thomas Cundall and Isobell Lockwood
