Why do the colours on the medal ribbon seem to be reversed?

In the photo the darker colour appears to be in the middle, but in Frank's link, the yellow is in the middle and the darker red to the outside.

Sorry,     Not being helpful really, just asking.

Wiggy.

It is something to do with the reaction to the colours in the development of old  photos, the colours of the Boer War Medal ribbons reacted in the same way, dark  and light colours appear reversed.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for both the restoration and for deciphering the uniform.  This photo may not be of my GGF, rather a brother or another relation.  James Ahern, my GGF also was a "policeman" in South Africa (then Cape Colony) for three years on his way to Australia.
As I indicated, he married in Ireland in 1882, his first son was born in Cape Colony not long afterwards and ended up in Australia by 1887.
I had always assumed that this photo was taken in his Cape Colony uniform (if it was him).
Now, I have a coloured picture that shows what the uniform looked like - how awesome.
Thank you very much, I do have other photos to date and will become a regular poster!  Hopefully, at some point to provide advice as well.
Regards
Linda
