I have John Roberts the son in 1891 census. He then lived in 21 Cornhill Porthmadog and I know this to be correct. There is a discrepancy with his age in this census but that did happen at times from what I understand?
John Roberts head 35 butcher Porthmadog
Ellen             wife   32              "   " ( even though I know she was born at Maentwrog)
Ann C Roberts dau 6   scholar
Robert G         son 4
John               son 2

Hi again, so in 1901 at 21, Cornhill, Ynycynhaiarn, Merionethshire

Is this Ellen :-

Ellen Roberts 44 Widow b Maentwrog
Samuel Richards 60 Widower b Festiniog
If the age is correct Ellen was older than John is this correct?
Census ref RG13/5261/75/25

What happened to the children?

EDIT that is of course the Ellen above is the correct one!

Not sure if this is any help but the nearest that I can find for him  in the 1871 is RG10/5701/8/7  grandson to a Richard Roberts

Borth Gest Road, Ynyscynhaiarn
John Roberts, 8, grdson, b. Ynyscynhaiarn

I would say that is the Ellen but no mention of the children? They seem to have an issue with giving right age for census!  Thanks Gadget will have a look at that. Might have to accept a dead end with these due to both father and son being John Roberts

Just a thought, ger ~

I noticed a possible Richard Roberts and family on the 1851 (didn't take notes though  :-\ ) and I recall he had a daughter Ellen but no sons. I'm wondering if John might be her son.

My grandfather was illegitimate and gave his own name as his father's on his marriage cert.

I sympathise as I've been looking for a John Roberts, b.c. 1800 for about 15 years  and so far I've not come up with anything probable!

That looks like possibly the same Richard as I found on the 1871 - so the 1901 John would be Richard's grt grandson.

I think they were on the 1851, Keyboard - any chance of looking for them as I'm deep into South African stuff at the moment.
