DIONNE Family- METIS Bloodlines???
« on: Saturday 27 August 16 18:39 BST (UK) »
Hello out there!
I am researching my family history and I have some reason to believe that there are metis bloodlines in my Dionne heritage originating in the Ayers Cliff region of Quebec.  I am having trouble figuring out where to start. I have my forfather bloodline mapped out all the way back to the original settler Antoine Dionne (Guyonne)

Please help!  Thank you in advance!
Bria Dionne

Good day bria,

I would start by contacting the Metis association located in the Ayers Cliff region of Quebec. I am not sure if the metis are tracked similar to status Indians in Canada. You don't provide any date information, but if you are looking at 1921 or before then, you may find information in the Canadian federal censuses. The censuses go back to the 1851/2 census. You may want to contact the local public library as well as genealogy group for help to locate information on your Dionne family.

hope this helps,
JDC

You'd have to find which descendant males married a woman of the country.
I just looked around and...
Antoine DIONNE (GUYONNE) dit SANSSOUCY and Catherine Yvory only had 2 males and they both died young. Unless the one of the 10 females had illegitimate children and used their own surname, is this likely?
There are very likely thousands of metis descendants but with different surnames.

adding..also found this so information online varies
Jean DIONNE-dit-SANSOUCY  (Antoine DIONNE / Catherine IVORY )
Aug 02 1694 Chateau-Richer, Montmorency 1, Quebec
Charlotte MIGNAULT  ( Jean B. MIGNOT-dit-CHATILLON / Louise CLOUTIER )

From a metis database so a good one to research http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/METIS/2006-01/1137235471

There are other Guyon/Dyon families in Quebec. Make sure you have followed back on your own and not tied into information from others.

Bria, I don't know what year this post is from? I assume it's older. But curious as a dionne what you've found out re: metis
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum CC....Sorry to say that Bria had never answered this post from almost 18 yrs ago...
As you can see there was no proof of any metis families in this old post.
I'm sure everyone knows that sharing a metis surname does not make one metis.
There does appear to be a few records of Dionne/ Dion metis scrip claims from the Red River/Rupertland/Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta...You'd need to do some extensive investigation into their & your genealogies to prove any relationship.
Note there appears to be a lot of a.k.a./Dit Blandion in those as well.

Here is an online Dionne family tree which claims metis status. I am only sharing it, not confirming.

 all the best, J.J.
