Tasmania, Convict Pardons and Tickets of Leave, 1834-1859
« on: Monday 29 August 16 00:05 BST (UK) »
Hi, I can see there is a William Walden on the New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia, Convict Pardons and Tickets of Leave, 1834-1859, on Ancestry's records, and I wondered if these records were also available on another source? If so, I would be grateful if someone could look this record up for me please. William Walden, born abt. 1804, Chedworth, Gloucs. He was transported on a life sentence to Tasmania in 1837.

As far as I can put together, William had a catalogue of convictions throughout his life, and I think he was transported AGAIN in 1851, for a seven year term, this time to Western Australia, on the 'Marion'. I have so far been unable to find any more details about this period, and would be very interested to find out when he might have returned home.

Many thanks :)

Hi there,

 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/terms.php

Best not to ask for look ups from the commercial family history websites.   The member of Ancestry may be breaching their membership T & C rules too.

It is quite possible that there was more than one chap in Tasmania with the name William WALDEN.  It is also possible that Walden has been mis-read and transcribed as Waldon, Wallon, Wallen, etc.

Have you checked your local public library to see if they have library versions of Ancestry or FindMyPast or similar?

Well he certainly wouldn't have been returning home. It didn't matter if it was a seven years sentence or a life term, transportation meant life away from England, They had a NO returns policy. So your chap must have either stayed in Tassie or been able to leave for another part of the colony once free by servitude, not a Ticket of leave. Not the fella in WA.

Conditional Pardon being considered, so as Neil said, one of those conditions would be to stay away from Britain.

I see there was a George WALDEN also convicted at Gloucester Assizes and transported for life  on board the Elphinstone in 1837.   Perhaps a brother?
