1939 register
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 22:10 BST (UK) »
I really don't know what I am doing wrong but I don't seem to be able to trace my family at all. My family moved house in 1939 but I don't know what date, but entering both places ends in no result..
My father was William Cecil Bownass born 1901 and my mother Eleanor Bownass also born 190l. In 1939 there were 4 children and I am the only one still alive. My sister Dorothy died in 1980  and my brother Arthur died in 2002 and William R died in 2006, so I would have thought some of the family would show up.
In 1939 the family moved from Kirkby Lonsdale in Westmorland [now Cumbria] to Lancaster in Lancashire. I have tried all these places but am unable to trace my family.
Can anybody advise what I am doing wrong?

Just try typing in the date of birth   of one person at a time  and see how many hits you get.

I can see how it has been mistranscribed.  Just looked at the original and unless you knew what the name was meant to be it could be read as Boronass.

Thank you so much all of you, I have  searched on and off since the register came out, but for some reason never thought to look for another version of the surname.
This is not the only thing wrong with the transcription. A name has been added from the address above in the original record making him head of the household, but also all the job descriptions, ages etc., have been transcribed off the wrong line My moither and elder brother are missing altogether and I am shown on there and I am certainly alive.
So, the record is shown as the Burnett family instead of the Bownass family. Mr Burnett who has nothing to do with the family is down as head, a Boarding house keeper when this should be my father, and my father is shown as unpaid domestic duties
The record carries on with every line wrong. I was three years old at the time, born in 1936, as shown on the original, under school age.. The transcription shows me as born in 1923 a domestic science teacher. The other names were obviously guests or servants at the time of the record being made..
I have amended as much as possible, so it will be interesting to see how they correct this.

I understand this register was transcribed in downward columns so that those transcribing it did not see all of the information on one person. In this case it seems they put it back together wrongly

Similar, but not so drastic, errors occurred on my auntie's record. On the transcript, she and her son were shown as living with an unknown man and her husband was nowhere to be seen (later found transcribed living with another woman.). The original showed them as a family unit with the other people in the adjacent houses. I found them both via dates of birth.

Hi Trishanne,

I noticed that too when I compared the transcription to the actual image.

Regarding searching - you can use an * instead of letters.  In the end I think I searched for B*n*s or Bo*n*s.
