I would be following John & Mary...

Mary RAE and Duncan MCCOLL married in 1855, Presbyterian, Hunter region.
NSW BDM has it as Line 456 of Volume 82,  "PC" district.

The only Mary having children in Scone is married to Duncan. They have 6 children from 1861-1871.

Here's the obit for a Mary McCOLL, wife of John McCOLL and with a son Donald.  But it is in Eltham, Vic ??

Bootzy if you look at an earlier post of mine - #6 - you will see that I have that BDM death registration already listed.

The point being that a birth can't be found to match.

From experience I have found that the birth registrations are more reliable than the death registrations. The reason being that births tend to be registered by the parents while deaths are often registered by relatives.

There's a deceased estate file for Mary McCOLL of Gundy died 27/11/1890 granted 1891

Here is probate notice in 1892 (?) - she is a widow

Although only speculation, I wonder if whoever registered the death mistakingly gave the wife's mother's name, which was Mary.
