Here's the newspaper entry referred to by Maureen.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I think this might be Charlotte in 1861:

The surname looks like COXON on the image. Niece Isabella SAWYER is with her SAWYER grandparents in 1881.

Maureen

I've had a look at this and I'm tempted to agree that Charlotte Coxon is Charlotte Sawyer, probably living with William Coxon as his common law wife as I can't see a marriage.  On the 1881 census, the niece, Isabella Sawyer is definitely with her grandparents, James and Elizabeth who are Charlottes parents.

Chris, I fully agree with you. At the moment I do not have the details on that family tree, but I do know that I had come to that conclusion, so will follow it through, and add the details, as I should have. :'(

Isabella is Josephs daughter, and ends up in Canada. Another tangled line to follow. ::)

I followed Isabella Sawyer through the census returns firstly to make sure it was the correct Sawyer family and secondly in the hope that Charlotte might turn up.
In 1871  Isabella is at East Side Longton as a boarder with her baby son Thomas.
In 1891 she is with her grandparents, James and Elizabeth in Sutherland Road Longton. Thomas isn't with her but she has two more children, James 7 and William 5

I noticed that Thomas and James both had the middle name Okell (Oakell) and guessing this was the fathers name, I found a Thomas Oakhill on the 1871 census as a visitor with James Sawyer.
In 1881 Thomas Okell Sawyer is with Thomas Okell in Macclesfield

Not much help in finding Charlotte, but sometimes a bit of background information is interesting

Chris, thank you for that. This Sawyer family is really difficult to sort out, but that is the "fun" of doing genealogy. ::)

I am of the opinion, needing more information, that Isabella had the two boys "out of wedlock" to Thomas Okel. She then had William, but gave him the Sawyer name. She then took up with Peter Harrison and had a further 9 children. Between 1881 and 1885, she and Peter moved to Canada.

Charlotte is hiding somewhere after 1869, her marriage to Thomas Robinson, but as it is a fairly common name, it is difficult to follow them :-X :-X

Yes, Charlotte is certainly elusive but I'm sure she's there somewhere - she may even have a different name by 1881  ;D
