Hi Geejayboy
You probably need to post a information a bit more specific to get more help.
On Census 1881, there are:
190 GELLATLY birth years 1797 to 1881, 90 of these are in Census for Dundee.

JOHNSTON - search Census Place:
Note 1881 Census CD does not combine JOHNSTON and JOHNSON - you have to search each seperately.
Airlie - 1 residing there JOHNSTONE who was born in Newtyle[/color]
JOHNSTON, David   Head   <1857>   Birth:   Angu   Newtyle
   Census:   Forf   Airlie

JOHNSTONE, William   Son   <1879>   Birth:   Angu   Auchterhouse
   Census:   Forf   Newtyle

Kirkbuddo - no results JOHNSTON or JOHNSON
Forfar - 111 residing there JOHNSTON, but no JOHNSON

JOHNSTONE - Search Birth place:
Airlie 6 born there JOHNSTON (no JOHNSON apart from Cementine above) :
JOHNSTON, Cathren   Wife   <1852>   Birth:   Angu   Airlie
   Census:   Forf   Monikie

   Census:   Forf   Forfar

Kirkbuddo - no results

Forfar - 87 results born there JOHNSTON, 0 JOHNSON

I f you want details of any of those, please ask.
But with the Forfar JOHNSTON and the  GELLATLY, there are too many without more details to go on.

Hi

James Erskine, born 05/06/1831 @ Forfar.

The 1841 census enumerates an Elizabeth Johnston (aged 15 years) and a James Johnston (aged 10 years) @ North Mains of Kinnettles, Angus with James Rea (a farmer, aged 40 years).

Also, an Agnes Johnston (nee Rae) died 31/10/1888 @ Forfar aged 90 years, widow of William Johnston and mother of David. However, this Agnes was the daughter of Alexander Rae/Elizabeth R*msay.
Checked IGI and SP and there was another Agnes born also @ Kinnettles (14/02/1798), daughter of Alexander.

Therefore, there are two Agnes', one born 1783 - daughter of James - and one born 1798 - daughter of Alexander.

Just to "complicate" matters further, there is the following family enumerated in the 1841 census for Lunanhead, Forfar :

Johnston - William - M - 55 years - Hand Loom Weaver - Born Angus

Johnston - Agnes - F - 40 years - Born Angus

Johnston - Jane - F - 15 years - Born Angus

Johnston - William - M - 8 years - Born Angus

Johnston - Alexander - M - 6 years - Born Angus

Johnston - John - M - 3 years - Born Angus

Johnston - George - M - 9 mnths - Born Angus
