David Rennie Malcolm Scrimgeour, Born Transvaal 1894
« on: Friday 23 September 16 14:55 BST (UK) »
My maternal grandfather was born in the Transvaal in 1894 according to all the following UK census and his WW1 Army Records. Consequently I have no record of his date of birth and would appreciate any suggestions of where to look. His parents and siblings are shown in the 1891 and 1901(including him) census as living in Dundee. I suspect the family went to Johannesburg to earn their fortune before being frightened off by the war. I have attempted this question in the past with no luck.

Was his father in the forces?

May be recorded on SP which is down at the moment?

It might be better to post on the old thread so people can see what information has already been shared.

All the best

Hi, I saw his army records dated the 7th September 1914.
Age 20years and 180 days.
The 12th of March that would be.
What ever the date is,  work back and you get the date.....it's a forces thing!
They go from January to December.

Hi all.
Rosinish in reply Yes you have found him and he was a stonemason, which leads me to think the family went to take advantage of the goldrush.
Philipsearching, Yes that was the original thread.
Maggsie, I never knew that. I now need some more fingers to work this out.
Thank you all for a fast response.

Even they can be wrong. I have a birth certificate that does not exactly match the birth date given on the forces records for my grandfather

Yes, me too, you have to keep digging and then pay for the actual certificates.
Good fun isn't it!
