Yet another Gibson of Hexham for dating, please!
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 17:36 BST (UK) »
This time it's of 'Cousin Thomas'. I do wish he'd included his surname.

Different cardstock from the previous two I posted. Corners are square, not rounded. Going by the simplicity of the design on the back I'm wondering if it's mid-1860's? (I'm probably wrong  ::) )

Not sure if Jim has seen this one, Jennifer, so a bit of a leg up and to say that it looks early 1860s to me - very plain back. I'm not too good with men's dress styles. I'll leave that to Jim  :)

The buttoning of the jacket leans towards 1860's, but the light trousers darker jacket could be as late as 1870. The photo style is certainly early with the plain back.

Here's an 1864 one, Jennifer:

Very similar.

Added -  found quite a few 1860s pics of gents with pale  trousers

Thanks very much both of you, based on what you say and the photos you linked to, Gadget, I will stick with my initial (inexpert) opinion of mid 1860's  :-\

As everyone has suggested it's 1860's.
The beard is commonly called a Newgate Frill & the style of contrasting trousers was popular 1850's & 60's. They could be quite garish in colour, red, yellow, green blue etc.
The long lounge jacket was also becoming popular in the 1860's.
So Thomas the dapper chap with a cousin called Mary.
Should be easy.

Sounds a bit Michael Portillo-ish  :)

Thanks very much Jim.
