His baptism is indeed on familysearch but transcribed as Emett (you would think it would come up on an 'Emmett' search but it doesn't):

John Emett bp.18/7/1784 Abbotskerswell, Devon, son of John Emett and Mary

also

Margaret Emett bp.13/2/1779    ditto

John Emet married Mary Sheppard 3/5/1776 Abbotskerswell (also on familysearch).

Hi

May I praise the skills of annette7, Suzard, CaroleW et al

I have learned so much using rootschat, however I do find it difficult to get around it.  like finding my topic each time I log on.

I am currently working on the data received.  John Emmett born 1784 married Mary Garrett 1807.  However Mary was born in 1793 so she would have been 13 when they married.  Not impossible I suppose.
I have confirmed that Edward Garrett can't be Mary's brother because he has different named parents.

Jolly good fun and I am appreciating all the support I have received

I can't find anywhere the date of birth of Mary garrett - her baptism was 1793 - but it doesn't state that was her d.o.b. -she was not necessarily baptised shortly after her birth

Hi Suz

Good point.  Something I am not used to.

I have found 2 Mary Garretts listed in Family Search, one born 12 Sep 1784 Abbottskerswell, parents John and Elizabeth.  This is a good date.  Looking more closely  her name is actually Ann Elizabeth.

The other born 18 Aug 1793 parents John and Ann  (NB Aug not Apr from other sources) which has been the one shown as spouse of John Emmett

Did Elizabeth die and John Garrett remarry and they produce a second Mary - doubtful.  Delayed baptism does seem more likely.

Will keep working and thank you

The 1841/1851 census show Mary to have been born ca.1785/6 - like John - and I would say the baptism you've found 12/9/1784 Abbotskerswell is the right Mary Garrett.

Hi Annette

You are clever.  I should have seen that, as my wife would say - I don't instructions carefully enough.

I shall take the 1784 Mary and work back from there.

It should come as no surprise that in 18th century my family couldn't write.  Searching around John Emmett (Emmet-Emett) I think I have discovered his father Nicholas Emitt and same dates Nichols Emmitt and his mother Darothy.  Good west country accent there.

Searching is full of anomalies such as Emmet producing a result on a site sometimes and then not on the next visit to confirm
