Looks like an over head tram structure - are those railings not in the Bispham area -

   Yes.   That is my second alternative.    Somewhere between Bispham and Fleetwood.  I have spent an hour trawling through images of Southport  and am unable to find evidence, sorry.

I have spent a lot of time on the Fylde Coast, I am sure that Sandra is correct about the Tram line between Blackpool and Fleetwood.   have a look at

Perhaps Bispham is slightly to high and not nearer enough to the beach as the original photograph shows

I am open to the fact I could be wrong SB and Sandra , but I live on the Fylde and it's not something that I've ever seen,  either by picture or when I was younger.

What about Morecambe ? it's a bit flatter than Blackpool

You could be right Claire, Bispham was an initial thought but then looked a little to high on some other picture I found, must be a bit of a hill down to the next level and then the shore.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I might see if I can find other photos taken at the time which might have other information in them. At present, the photos are only roughly sorted. I need a whole extra me to just concentrate on family history and photo archiving.

OH does not remember railings like that at Morecambe in the 1950's. 

Looking at online photo's of Morecambe they are mostly metal railings
