German troop training for the Kaffraria War
« on: Wednesday 05 October 16 12:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I think this is a bit unusual and hopefully I have the right board.

One of my relatives was a soldier in the Crimea War, when it was finished the story goes the some of the troops were trained at Aldershot and sent of to fight in the Kaffraria wars.

Can anybody give me any ideas who I can contact to find records of these troops and their training in Aldershot.  It seems that one of the prerequisites for being posted to Africa was that the soldiers were married and if they were not then they quickly found themselves a Wife.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Scouseboy

thanks for your interest.

My Wife's great grandfather Julius Kessler went to Kaffraria aboard the Covenantor in November 1856.  He was part of the German British Legion.

But according to records he was trained at Aldershot Hampshire.

The problem we have is that the Government in their wisdom thought it unwise to send single men so they all had to be married before they arrived in Kaffraria.  We know his Wife's name was Louise but we are trying to locate a passenger list or a list of the troops with their families to find a Maiden name for Louise or in fact any other information that we don't already have on Julius or the Kaffraria wars.

regards

Tom

Hi Tom
Not sure if you are still wanting information but I believe the Louise you are looking for is Louisa Marlinghaus.  They had a son called Paul who was my mother's great grandfather.  Have you managed to find out any other info at all?
