Looks 1920's. The one in uniform looks like she delivering telegraphs.
Could the building be an exchange.

There's a photo in the Christmas 2016 issue of Family Tree magazine (the UK one) which reminded me of this one - it's also online at https://www.family-tree.co.uk/news-and-views/new-service-aids-researchers-tracing-nurses

It's taken from a collection belonging to the Royal College of Nursing, and the magazine article identifies the subject as a Nurse Swan, working in Sussex. There's another picture of her on the RCN site at https://www.rcn.org.uk/library/exhibitions-and-events/exhibitions/public-health

I know it's not exactly the same, but it suggests that there were certain peacetime professions where women rode motorbikes.

Looking at our picture again, the building in the background appears to be a large public building of some kind, with a fairly distinctive entrance/portico on the left. I'm just wondering if there's any hint as to where it might have been taken, or where the OP's mother was living in the 1920s or so. It's just possible that knowing what the building was might help to identify the job and uniform.

The Gloves  are similar to the ones worn   by a motorbike Police officer.

The black  jacket has a military style about its pockets.

The building  looks like a  Public   building    built for a Government department.

Can anyone read the signs on the building?

I'm not sure but I think there has been another post regarding a similar uniform  :-\

I was wondering if she may indeed have been a Girl Guide (or someone along those lines) looking at the belt she is wearing with the whistle attached on one side and something on the other side.

Surely a Girl Guide would have had more Badges and insignia, anda Lanyard?

Thanks all - I have not lost interest but I don't seem to have had notification of replys until today.

My mother lived in Northampton and was taken by her grandparents to Bristol for summer holidays
likely lateish 20's early 30's to visit relations.
Girl Guide badges would probably on the blouse underneath the jacket
