Looking for help Rajko Tavčar (Tavcar)
« on: Monday 10 October 16 03:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm writing you from Slovenia and I would need your help. My mum gave me this photo on which is her uncle. I think that he is in a British uniform, but I'm not sure, so I'm looking for some help. He is the one with the beard. Could you help me to identify the uniform of the guy with the beret too?
The photo was taken in somewhere in southern Italy probably in 1944 or 1945, not sure about that.

Kind regards
Aljosa

Welcome to Rootschat, aljosa

Do you know the story behind the photograph?  The men are not wearing their complete uniforms so I was wondering if they were prisoners of war or escapees.  I notice one man is wearing a tam o'shanter hat so could well be from a Scottish regiment?  The photo isn't very clear, but the man on the right could be wearing a glengarry cap, which was also worn by Scottish regiments.  I am sure others far more knowledgeable than me will appear to help!

A warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

If you let us have the name of your uncle it might let us find out a possible regiment or corps for him.

There isn't really enough detail on the photo to see insignia on the uniform, so this could be a slow process of elimination!

All the best
Philip

And a welcome from me too.

To narrow it down slightly, the head gear is for a Scottish Regiment.

They look like "irregulars"  what we would call today "Special Forces"

It looks like a bucket.

The men are holding mugs, so I suspect that bucket contains their tea.

Thanks for confirming the headgear is for a Scottish Regiment, Jebber.  My comment was a hunch rather than a certainty!

Hi,

thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it.
My mum's uncle is the one with the beard. He died in 1954 when my mum was a little girl, so she doesn't remember all the details. He was imprisoned by the Italians, first to Rome, then to Isernia. She believed that the camp was liberated by the British, but she doesn't know why he would be in the uniform. His name was Rajko Tavčar (Tavcar) if that can help.

Thanks again for all your help.

What nationality was he?

To my thinking, if he was imprisoned for a long time, he may have been wearing any clothes he could lay his hands on, and therefore it may have no relevance to the regiment to which he belonged. I would think that if a fellow prisoner died, his clothes would have been "recycled".
