Thanks Gadget for that link.  I have revised my thought and don't now think it is Berry.

Does look like D not a B.  (Derry perhaps?)

I vote for Derry, I don't think the first letter looks enough like a B for Berry.

Just wanted to explain my reasoning for suggesting “Berry”. The Ds in the three Decline words (last column) of the larger image are consistently formed (down stroke, little curl at bottom, around from bottom to top, varying curl at top, out to the next letter). The first letter in the mystery word is formed completely differently. Apart from the front of the B (or whatever you call it) the two Bs in the larger image (Bgn and Boswell) are consistently formed and they match the formation of the mystery letter (downstroke, upstroke, around from top to bottom, little loop at the bottom). The only thing different is the ‘front’ which is different in all three - probably depending on how fast the words were written.
