Thanks RK - just following your lead - The sad part was reading through the Canadian, WWII Service Files of War Dead, 1939-1947 for the son Charles Cyril Brook.  :'(

Canada Voters List 1935 - Cyril Brook (gentleman) and Mrs Cyril Brok (married woman) 1021 King Street London Ontario.

Cyril Brook was listed on Canada Voters List 1945 - retired - 1021 King Street - also names were Grace and daughter Marjorie (nurse).

Cyril had been described as "invalid father" on the attestation papers for the son.

Canada Voters List 1949 named - Cyril, Grace and Marjorie Brook at the same address.

There was no "wow" factor in your reply - do we presume that you knew some of the family had ended up in Canada ?

Perhaps the marriage certificate for John and Amy might throw some light on his parents - all we know so far is the father was James.

Getting back to your original question, there is no trace of John in the 1861, 1871 or 1881 Canadian censuses.  I can see why you are puzzled about this man's whereabouts prior to his marriage to Amy Isabel THOMASON on Boxing Day 1885 since there is no discernible trace of him in England on findmypast prior to that date.  For those on here that have been tracing his children and grandchildren, the following lists the 6 known children of John & Amy (who died Jan-Mar 1908, thus children becoming Home Children).

May Vida Apr-Jun 1889 Grantham Lincolnshire 7a 501
Andalusia Amy Jan-Mar 1891 Hunslet Yorkshire 9b 293
Grace Isabel Oct-Dec 1892  Hunslet Yorkshire 9b 299
Clifford Thomason Apr-Jun 1894 Hunslet Yorkshire 9b 281
Margery Jan-Mar 1897 Biggleswade Bedfordshire 3b 379 (mother Amy born Biggleswade)
Thomas Phillip Jan-Mar 1901 Hunslet Yorkshire 9b 213

I think you will find that not all of the children entered Canada as Home Children.

There was no birth registration in the Whittlesey Cambridge area from 1850 - 1865 for a John Dorrington that I could see - the births I checked in the 1850's didn't have a father James  ???

Canadian Passenger List - Philip Dorrington born 1902 Leeds and aged 24 years. Travelled Liverpool to Quebec on the Montcalm arriving 23 July 1926 on the Montcalm. Occupation Miner - going to sister Mrs Cyril Brook, 1021 King Street, London Ontario. Name of nearest relative in country from whence came was Mrs May V Severs 77 Oxford Street Sheffield.

In my notes - I had noted there was a Phillip Dorrington showing up on Canada Voters List  Lincoln Ontario in 1935 (sailor) with a wife Mrs Philip Dorrington and again in 1949 Phillip Dorrington (engineer) 18 Alexandra Street Lincoln Ontario.  Would need to verify if this was the same Phillip.

The sister mentioned on the passenger list May V Dorrington had first married Henry Wigfall - Sept 1917  - Wortley, Yorkshire West Riding -  9c 516

The death of Henry Wigfall was recorded Ecclesall B - September 1925 - 9C 308

Second marriage for Mary nee Dorrington/Wigfall was to Thomas Severs in Q1 of 1926 - Ecclesall Bierlow -    Yorkshire West Riding - 9C 509
