Jane Wood nee Cray
« on: Monday 17 October 16 13:00 BST (UK) »
Jane Cray born 1826 at Great Elm Somerset. Cannot find her in 1881 although she must have been living somewhere in the Ashwick/Chilcompton area.
I have her in 1871 and in 1891 she was on Parish relief living with Amelia Pointing (who might have been a relation?). 1901 at Moorwood ,(Ashwick) and died 1908

She married Luke Wood in 1853 so are you looking for her under Cray or Wood in 1861 as it's not clear from your post.  Please give details of any children born before 1881.  When did Luke die?

1871 and 1891 birthplace is Wells - not Great Elm.  1861 shows Great Elm (Elem)

Harriet is not on the 1871 entry - 1861 shows her aged 5

Did Harriet or Elizabeth marry before 1881 - could Jane be living with one of them and transcribed under their married name?

In 1881 she was at Gurney Slade. RG11/2406/F68. Widow, Needle woman, born Great Elm.
Living with her are Sarah Perry 49 and Amelia Perry 25, both unemployed, one blind and the other an "imbecile".

In 1871 the birthplace given is Mells, not Wells. Mells is adjacent to Great Elm. Neither is in the parish of Wells.

David

ETA. Ancestry have misread her age in 1881 as 35, which is why she doesn't turn up in a search with the correct birth year.

1901 aged 74 living with her widowed daughter Elizabeth Lovell, with three children Gladys,Elsie and Stanley. Also Luke her son, noted as a visitor.  Elizabeth Lovell married Henry Lovell (Coal merchant) 1886. He died 1895.
Thanks for the input folks. More pieces of the jigsaw now in place.

I wonder what happened to Harriet?
