I replied in haste last night after a tiring evening out - I had, as mentioned at the outset, found the birth and death of a Harriet whose DOB and place of birth fitted. But thanks for your interest and help.
The search continues.....

I can add Thomas Hodgskin Brown birth reg 1Q 1852 and both Thomas and Herbert were christened on 9 Nov 1855 Holy Trinity Milton by Gravesend.

So Thomas's birth date may add to fact that John Brown whose birth appears to be in 1851 in Ireland may not be Harriet's son. There is then a gap of several years before Ernest is born...but can't trace his birth. I will investigate Holy Trinity's records to see if there is any further information.

OK I have John Brown, Thomas Hodgskin Brown, Herbert Samuel Hodgskin Brown & Arthur Brown all christened 9 Nov 1855 at Holy Trinity....parents John & Harriet, living at Whitehall Place. John is a contractor.
So Arthur also did not have Hodgskin added to his name.

I will continue to search...

That's fantastic ...I was just looking at possible 1911 census for him and his wife is Mary Ann
 :)

what is more one of the witnesses Mary Ann Keating was future wife of his brother Thomas.

Thanks so much.
