15th Kings Hussars 1870s - David HUNTER
« on: Friday 04 November 16 06:07 GMT (UK) »
My gg grandfather was a Private in the 15th Hussars c1870.

His name was David Henry HUNTER. He was actually born in Belfast c1852, son of Hugh & Annie.

I believe his service number was 1059.

Hoping to find the service details please as it may tie up some loose ends in later certificates.

(I have his marriages and children in Kent - just seeking service details please. Likely death for him in 1885 in Kent aged 33. No hard proof this is the right chap, though 1881 is the last census I can find him and by the 1891 Census his wife is shown as a widow.)

Thank you, ShaunJ.

Hm interesting. Occupation and age match but I have him as born in Belfast, Ireland in later censuses. I'll check it out.

Do any of his certificates - marriage and /or for the birth of a child give army details?

Ken

I have actually purchased quite a lot of certificates for this line as they proved a little tricky.

I managed to find David Hy in the 1881 census as a child, born Margate, with parents:
1881 Census – Kent, England
David HUNTER, Head, Male, 28, b. Belfast, Ireland, Painter
Eliza HUNTER, Wife, Female, 21, b. Margate, Kent, England, Painter Wife
David H. HUNTER, Son, Male, 3, b. Margate, Kent, England
Eliza LUCKETT, Boarder, Female, 25, b. Margate, Kent, General Servant
Dwelling: 4 Mummery Bldgs. (King St.)
Census Place: Margate St John Baptist, Kent, England

But could find no birth for him. You'll notice above the father David is shown as born in Belfast.

I found David snr's marriage to Eliza GILBERT in July 1880 - he is shown as David HUNTER, painter, widower, age 28, father Hugh HUNTER, cabinetmaker.

So this meant Eliza was not David Hy's mother.

Eventually I think cracked it...but it is complicated.

Henry David BROWN, b. 7 Sept 1877 at 181 High St Margate, mother Sarah Elizabeth BROWN, father not stated. (I have this certificate)

Then this baptism:
Name David Henry Brown
Father's Name David Brown
Mother's Name Eliza Brown
Date of Baptism 7th October 1877
Parent's Occupation: Private, Soldier<<<<
Abode 181 High Street Margate
Parish Church Margate St John
Ceremony Performed By G J Everest Curate
Parish Thanet

Then a marriage as follows on 7 July 1878 St John Thanet:
William David HUNTER, 26, bachelor, carpenter, 181 High St Margate
Sarah Elizabeth BROWN, 22, spinster, 181 High St Margate

Wm's father - Hugh HUNTER, carpenter
Sarah's father - Henry Marsh BROWN, porter

They had a son named William Hugh, b. 20 Jan 1880 at 4 Victoria Rd Margate, reg 23 Feb 1880. Father David HUNTER, general labourer, mother Sarah Elizabeth HUNTER formerly BROWN (deceased).

Sarah's burial:
Name: Sarah Elizabeth Hunter
Date of Burial: 19 February 1880
Age: 24
Abode: Victoria Road Margate
Parish Church: Margate St John
Parish: Thanet

And this leaves him to marry Eliza GILBERT in July of that year...

I believe this to be David snr with his father Hugh:
1861 census – Middlesex, England
King's Arms Court, Finsbury, St Luke, Middlesex
Hugh HUNTER 50 cabinetmaker b. Ireland
Annie HUNTER 46 wife b. Ireland
Mary Ann 18 dau b. Ireland, tailoress
David 10 scholar b. Ireland<<<<
William 4 b. Middlesex city

Thoughts??? Make sense???

FindMyPast has the 15th Hussars discharge papers for 1059 Private David Hunter. He was a carpenter born Shoreditch, London circa 1851.

So as you can see, carpenter certainly fits, as does his age, but not the birthplace.

Does it state when he was discharged?

Oh dear. Nowhere near Margate.

This is very confusing!!!

So is there another David HUNTER who was in the 15th Hussars??? Or have I followed the wrong line???
